Weekend Results 20th to 23rd March 2014: Monuments holds onto the top, after the openers fail to arrive

This weekend saw the wide opening of 4 films (with 3 over 100 screen counts), but you would not have known it. The Monuments Men stood proud over a very weak weekend as the only film to make more than 1m this weekend.
Monuments made 1.7m for a good running total of 5.1m. The lack of real competition (or at least the failure of over the past few weeks) has allowed Monuments to stand a lot taller than expected. Last weekends other opener actually moved up a spot into second even though it dipped below 1m this weekend. Need for Speed begain it's deceleration from it's already low starting point. Speed has 2.9m in the kitty and will likely struggle to make it to 5m unless it can survive the 2 to 3 weeks before the school holidays hit. 3rd belonged to our highest opener in Ride Along. Black american comedies tend not to do well here. Ride Along once again proved this. Ride Along excelled in the US hence why we got a reasonable release here. Still it fell just short of 1m which isn't all bad for a film of this type here. 4th belonged to the 3 week old 300: Rise of the Empire. Rise has amassed a middling to disappointing 7.4m. It was never expected to match the original films strong nearly 15m finish, but it now seems that 10m is a step to far for this film, something i really thought this was striding for. To round out the 5 was the weeks 2nd biggest opener, Pompeii. Sometime ago, i had this film pegged as a potentially mid range film with a chance of breaking out. I missed the mark completely on this. I at least would have expected an opening above Ride Along (given that genre's normal performance here). Given it's US run though, I am no surprised. This film had a lot of potential, but missed the mark on all but the cheesy fun stuff. 600k is just not good enough ...

Cuban Fury also opened to 313k. and I Frankencrash openeed with a mere 183k.

All in all a very weak weekend. Lets hope Noah and Mr Peabody can revive things as we close in on the Easter holidays. In regards to the holidays this year, I'm not sure what NSW is doing, but Queensland is having their 2 week holiday before the easter weekend which should meaning an improving box office from 2 weekends time.
