Weekend Results: 20th to 23rd February 2014 - Mick Taylor brings on another Gorefest...

As expected, Wolf Creek 2 opened on top of the charts over the weekend, handily eclipsing the the first film by 37% on it's first full weekend with a total of 1.7m. The original film of course went onto make 6m.  Wolf Creek 2 does have a slightly advantage given that it's only MA15+ rated against the original films rating of R18+.  Right behind Wolf Creek 2, was american war film, Lone Survivor with 1.5m.  Last weekends leader The Wolf of Wall Street, fell to 3rd with a further 1.1m and a total of nearly 20m.  The wolf has had an amazing run and looks to finish in the mid 20m's at this point.  4th was Last Vegas down 46% with Robocop rounding out the top 5 now with with a running total of 5.8m.

As expected, most films took a dive after the bump that most films received from Valentines Day.  Of note, Gravity just doesn't seem to want to go away, with it re-entering the top 20 this week (it's 21st week in the chart) and now with a running total of 21.8m.  Lastly, Moshi Monsters The Movie, attempted to bring the world of moshi monsters to life but only succeeded in scaring audiences away instead. Moshi somehow scored 119 screens but barely managed to scrape into the top 20 with a woeful average of only 717.  Still it's not a complete wash given it only cost 1.5m pounds and no doubt will already have made it's money make in the UK.

Cacthing Fire is #1 for 2013

Just a quick note to say congratulations on Catching Fire for finally passing Iron Man 3 and becoming the #1 film that opened in 2013.  Catching Fire left the top 20 about 3 weeks ago with a total of 39.19m.  Catching Fire has finally wound up with 39.45m.

I should note that this means no film made it past 40m even though we have 4 films past the 35m (with a 5th getting close to the 35m crest).

Weekend Results 13th to 16th February 2014: the Wolf of Wall street back on top. Robocop slips

After slipping to second last weekend, The Wolf of Wall Street has returned to the top of the charts this weekend dipping a minuscule 11%.  Wolf has now passed 18m and should pass 20m next weekend.  Wolf has held up very well since it opened and total of 25m+ is outstanding for a R18+ film (given the previous high was only 12.8m from 1992.)  Slipping to second was Robocop also dropping a small (especially for the type of film) 26% this weekend.  I believe both of these films benefited from valentines day as did nearly all films in the top 20 this weekend.  3rd was Last Vegas steady from weekend down only a mere 8%.  Endless love was the biggest opener of the weekend making just over 1m.  Are we officially dating also opened just below that with 959k.

Other openers of the weekend included Winter's Tale with a terrible 552k, Dallas Buyers Club with 400k and Gunday only 14 screens for 100k.

6th to 9th February 2014 - Weekend Results : Robocop takes control

Robocop took control of the box office wresting control from the 3 week old wolf of wall street.  Robocop managed 2.28m over weekend besting Wolf by a mere 40k which slipped by 40% from last weekend.  Robocop made a nice average on what appeared to be a surprisingly low screen count of only 224.  I thought, given this film would be considered to be one of the bigger releases of early 2014 stateside, I thought that this would have a much higher screen count.  After pulling off the largest ever R18+ opening in Australia, Wolf has now managed to surpass the 22 year old record owned by Basic Instinct during the week, making it now the highest grossing R18+ film in Australian history.  Taking into account adjusted figures, Wolf will still need a further 7m before it is on par with Basic Instinct. This is still quite possible given it has already made 15m to date.  Last Vegas opened in 3rd place with 1.6m.  12 years a slave slipped into 4th by 38%.  the book thief rounded out the 5.

Also opened over the weekend was Mandela: Long Walk to freedom with a very disappointing 570k.  Labor Day however outright bombed with a mere 332k.  Last weeks bomb Grudge Match must have crashed as it disappeared from the top 20 altogether.

Most of the big holiday movies took a further hit over the weekend losing a large number of screens.  In particular, the hobbit 2 lost more than half the screens it was on this week sealing it fate of falling short of the 40m mark.  Surprisingly it held the largest screen loss of the entire top 20 this week.  Frozen has continued to track towards the 35m mark.

January 30th - February 2nd 2014 Weekend Results

After it's impressive debut last weekend, The wolf of wall street followed it up with an impressive hold dipping a small 27%.  Wolf has now amassed an amazing 12m and will become the biggest R18+ rated film in Australian history sometime this week (passing Basic Instincts 12.7m from 1992).  The length of time that film has held the record indicates how rare it is for a R18+ film to be this big.  Frankly at this pace, Wolf has a chance at passing the adjusted figure for Basic Instinct which is around 22.5m.  12 Years a slave had it first full weekend after being in pre-release last weekend, taking out second spot for 1.2m.  The book thief steadied in 3rd for another 1m on it's way to a likely total north of 15m.  Frozen, after having an amazing run through the holidays finally crashed back to earth dipping an expected high 63%. Still Frozen has now amassed 33m and is still an outside shot of reaching 35m.  Rounding out the 5 was Saving mr banks which has quietly amassed nearly 10m since it opened 4 weeks ago.  Grudge Match also opened this weekend and got destroyed only making a mere 350k.
